JJ Abrams PSA for the TEACH Campaign

Teaching is a rewarding and challenging profession where you can make a lasting impact. You can have a positive influence on students, schools, and communities now and into the future. Schools across the nation are in need of a diverse set of talented teachers, especially in our big cities and rural areas, and especially in the areas of Math, Science, Technology,  Special Education, and English Language Learning.

The TEACH campaign is an initiative of the United States Department of Education designed to raise awareness of the teaching profession and get a new generation of teachers to join the ones who are already making a difference in the classroom. At TEACH.gov you can learn what it’s really like to be a teacher and get the tools you need to launch your own career in education.

The Hive “Hive-lings” Advise Future Filmmakers @ The LA Film Festival

Saturday June 18th, 2011: The Hive co-founder/partner/editor, Yesenia Higuera, was asked to participate at The 2011 LA Film Festival. Yesenia was honored to be one of 12 advisors at the Future Filmmakers Guidance Sessions Lounge sponsored by third favorite store Best Buy @ The ESPN Zone.

The following is an excerpt I stole from the “2011 Future Filmmakers Guidance Session” flyer (they can explain the event better than me):

“Now in its second year, we are continuing our youth initiatives by offering on-on-one guidance sessions to the filmmakers participating in the Future Filmmakers Showcase. The showcase is a collection of high school shorts whose young voices from across the U.S. candidly explore the world around us through timely documentaries, offbeat comedies, original music videos, and unique animated stories.”

Back to Yesenia; her task was to participate in a “speed dating” format where each advisor would meet individually with each participating high school filmmaker for 15 minutes. During the meeting it would be the assignment of the advisor to put forth their wisdom of filmmaking and assist the student filmmaker with their quest into the industry.

Just encase you were not aware, Yesenia is a world class film editor whose credits include The History Channel’s feature documentary, “The People Speak” and the current Department of Education’s “TEACH” PSAs, which feature President Obama, Oprah, JJ Abrams and Bill Gates. Yesenia is co-partner of the Post Production Company, The Hive located in the Hollywood Hills.

Accompanying Yesenia to the event was her trustworthy, loyal and charming business partner Benjamin (who happens to be writing this superb article). I was very excited to go with Yesenia and never ever had the intention of bumming around The ESPN Zone and watching some of the on-going football (NOT SOCCER) tournament “The Gold Cup”.

Upon early arrival at the event, we were greeted by Project: Involve Manager, the great Francisco Velasquez. Mr. Velasquez informed us that one of the advisors had yet to turn up and asked me if I would fill in for the MIA advisor. Without hesitation, I said “YES, show me to the youngling in need of excellent filmmaking advice!”  After two rounds of giving outstanding guidance, I surrendered my seat to the late advisor. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would urge anyone to participate in similar events.

Benjamin Price is The Hive’s other partner and is head of the Motion Comic Department and new business development.
